How Can Orthopedic Surgeon Matthew D. Barber Help Me?

An orthopedic surgeon treats disorders of the bones, the muscles and the connective tissue that links the two. Do not let the word "surgeon" fool you: An orthopedic surgeon will exhaust all conservative treatment options before they opt for surgery.

Issues an orthopedic surgeon can treat

Some orthopedic surgeons treat all parts of the body, while others specialize even further. Dr. Matthew D. Barber falls in the former category. He treats broken bones, painful joints, and injured muscles. He also treats problems like:

1. Sports injuries

The bones and muscles can take a lot of abuse during a workout or a game, but it only takes one wrong move to tear a tendon or sustain a fracture. Depending on the activity, a patient can sustain a sports injury in almost any part of the body.

The most common sports injuries that an orthopedic surgeon deals with are:

  • A knee injury where the Achilles tendon tears –– this is a common injury with people who play sports that require sudden changes in direction
  • A groin pull, which often happens when a person swings their upper body in a sudden movement, like in golf or baseball
  • Hamstring strain or tear
  • Shoulder injury

Depending on the extent of the injury, an orthopedic surgeon like Dr. Barber will try conservative treatment options. Often, a doctor will try physiotherapy, pain management, reduction of inflammation and rest before considering surgical options.

2. Joint problems

There are many reasons why the joints can act up. Continued stress can cause a joint to become stiff and painful; so can arthritis, trauma or the growth of bone spurs near the joint. Joint problems limit a person’s mobility while also causing pain and reducing the patient’s quality of life.

An orthopedic surgeon will work to treat the root cause of the stiffness and pain. With time, symptoms should lessen, or in some cases, go away completely.

3. Back pain

The lower back effectively supports the torso, whether a person is seated, on their feet or lying on their back. It is also required to move in all kinds of ways, depending on whether a person is dancing, bending or picking up a heavy parcel.

When the back starts having problems, life can slow to a crawl and affect mobility. An orthopedic doctor will treat the lower back pain by treating the thing that is causing it. Treatment may involve physiotherapy, mechanical back support, osteopathic manipulation or surgery. There are many more ways to treat back pain, depending on the root cause of the problem.

4. Broken or fractured bones

This is what orthopedic surgeons are known for. They treat breaks and fractures by setting the bone and sometimes, surgically reconstructing the bone.

5. Foot pain

The feet absorb the weight of the body as a person walks, runs, jumps or stands. Sometimes, the feet can develop problems caused by stress, strain, injury or some other medical condition.

An orthopedic surgeon is well versed in the diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders like:

  • Ankle sprains of fractures
  • Hammertoes
  • Heel spurs
  • Corns and bunions
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Diagnosis of diabetes-related foot problems

Do not wait any longer to seek treatment
