orthopedic surgeries Mobile, AL

Wondering if orthopedic surgeries are in your near future? This type of surgery is performed on those who are experiencing problems within their musculoskeletal system. This includes all the bones in the body, the joints, the muscles, the ligaments and the tendons. While orthopedic surgery can be extremely beneficial, many times patients are encouraged to use medication, lifestyle changes and physical therapy as a first recourse.

About orthopedic surgery

While an orthopedic surgeon will perform any necessary surgeries, they will need to first diagnose the problem so they can offer their patients a solution that will ideally work for them. Some orthopedic surgeons will decide to focus on a particular area of the body, so it is a good idea to find out more about a particular surgeon before choosing them to perform any necessary surgeries.

4 Common kinds of orthopedic surgeries

The list below includes some of the more common types of orthopedic surgeries performed today.

1. Knee arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that can diagnose and treat problems in the knee joint. The procedure requires an orthopedic surgeon to make a very tiny incision and then insert the arthroscope, a tiny camera, so they can see inside of the knee. This allows them to see any problems occurring within the knee and/or correct any problems within the knee.

2. Shoulder arthroscopy

A shoulder arthroscopy procedure is similar to the knee arthroscopy procedure except for the fact that it takes place in the shoulder area. Some of the more common reasons why this type of orthopedic surgery is necessary are to perform rotator cuff repair, repair any damaged ligaments, remove any swollen tissue, remove any loose cartilage and to remove or repair the labrum.

3. Knee replacement

This surgery is commonly performed with a goal of resurfacing the knee. Arthritis is a common reason for this type of orthopedic surgery, which tends to decrease proper knee function and, in turn, can cause patients a lot of pain. Another reason for knee replacement is experiencing some type of injury. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure to relieve pain, correct leg deformity and help people resume their normal activities.

4. Carpal tunnel release

Carpal tunnel release is a type of orthopedic surgery that is performed in order to treat those who have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. While there are two main types of surgical procedures to treat this syndrome, both types of procedures require an orthopedic surgeon to cut the ligaments in the hand. This is necessary as it helps to take the pressure off the median nerve, which in turn helps to relieve the painful symptoms.
